USD 214 chooses the Grant County Gazette

The Grant County School Board this month made an exciting decision at their July meeting. In an unanimous decision, they chose the Grant County Gazette to be their official voice. Last year the board had decided to use both newspapers as official papers.

Flanders welcomed as new pastor

For Wayne Flanders, his decision to become a pastor was solidified in high school after his teacher commented on a report he had to write about his possible career. He felt that God had been calling him to be a pastor, so he decided to make that one of his topics.

Lady long rider passes through Ulysses

A very interesting lady passed through Ulysses on Tuesday, July 15th. Bernice Ende, Trego, Montana is a member of the Long Riders Association. As a member of the Lady Long Riders an individual has to ride 1000 miles or more in a year.

$12000 Saved on Oxygen Tank

Cindy Howard-Reeves announced to the board that she had been able to save about $12000 of budgeted funds on the new oxygen tanks. It had been planned that a temporary tank be set up while waiting for a new tank to be built and delivered. Through persistent calling she had persuaded the company supplying the tank to get one to us sooner.

The July 15th County Commissioners meeting began with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance followed by review of the county's accounts payable. After a short discussion, a motion was made and accepted to approve the minutes and the bills.

Cavasos named School Resource Officer of the Year

On Thursday, July 17, 2008, Ulysses Police Department officer, Antonio (Tony) Cavasos, Jr. was named the 2008 Kansas Association of School Resource Officers, SRO of the Year. Cavasos is a thirteen-year veteran of the Ulysses Police Department, with the last seven years spent in the Ulysses schools as the fulltime resource officer.

Monday, July 14 A cat trap was requested at 816 N. Wichita Drive. Several requests were made to animal control for animals to be taken to the shelter. Nine vehicles were reported with broken windows. The reporting party from 2000 S. Rd. N didn't press charges.

Hess and Meyer to wed

Ashley Hess of Kearney, Nebraska and Chris Meyer of St. Paul, Nebraska announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. Parents of the couple are Alan and Eugena Hess of McCook, Nebraska and Fred and Kay Meyer of St. Paul, Nebraska. Ashley is the granddaughter of Gladys Awtrey of Ulysses.

Agustin and Alicia Galaviz are proud to announce the birth of their first grandchild, Isabella Anahi Ponce. Isabella was born to Karlo and Paola Ponce on June 1, 2008 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She weighed 7 pounds, 6 ounces and was 19 ð inches long.

The Topeka Art Guild invites Ulysses artists, professional, amateur and student, to participate in the annual juried competition: "Kansans Paint Kansas". Striving to make the 2008 event the most exciting in its history, the Art Guild Gallery, located at 5331 SW 22nd Place in Topeka, will exhibit winning works for one full month, beginning October 3.

Not having used a wood plane in a few years, Moses helped reacquaint me with its delicate function. He knew how to make the aromatic pine curl into a lacy pile on the floor. Amazing.

July 2, Hot Again, all crops are doing well and so are the weeds. All kinds of stock are doing well. A good soaking rain would not be out of place. July 16, Dr. Jones, a spectacle man was doing the town Wednesday. The South Cimarron was up in good shape this week, and some damage was done to the hay.
